Regge Behaviour from an Environmentally Friendly Renormalization Group
The asymptotic behaviour of cubic field theories is investigated in the Regge
limit using the techniques of environmentally friendly renormalization,
environmentally friendly in the present context meaning asymmetric in its
momentum dependence. In particular we consider the crossover between large and
small energies at fixed momentum transfer for a model scalar theory of the type
phi^2 psi. The asymptotic forms of the crossover scaling functions are
exhibited for all two particle scattering processes in this channel to one loop
in a renormalization group improved perturbation theory.Comment: 9 pages text, one figure, LaTeX, uses psfig.sty. Revised version
submitted to Phys. Lett. B., besides minor changes a figure to illustrate the
conventions and a discussion of the full crossover function have been adde
Cross-Border Investment, Conflict of Laws, and the Privatization of Securities Law
The rapid acceleration of transnational investing is occurring in an environment in which emerging markets, and foreign interest in these markets, are exploding. The issues involved with cross-border investment, conflict of laws and the privatization of securities law are examined
A Layman's guide to SUSY GUTs
The determination of the most straightforward evidence for the existence of
the Superworld requires a guide for non-experts (especially experimental
physicists) for them to make their own judgement on the value of such
predictions. For this purpose we review the most basic results of Super-Grand
unification in a simple and clear way. We focus the attention on two specific
models and their predictions. These two models represent an example of a direct
comparison between a traditional unified-theory and a string-inspired approach
to the solution of the many open problems of the Standard Model. We emphasize
that viable models must satisfy {\em all} available experimental constraints
and be as simple as theoretically possible. The two well defined supergravity
models, and , can be described in terms of only a few
parameters (five and three respectively) instead of the more than twenty needed
in the MSSM model, \ie, the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard
Model. A case of special interest is the strict no-scale
supergravity where all predictions depend on only one parameter (plus the
top-quark mass). A general consequence of these analyses is that supersymmetric
particles can be at the verge of discovery, lurking around the corner at
present and near future facilities. This review should help anyone distinguish
between well motivated predictions and predictions based on arbitrary choices
of parameters in undefined models.Comment: 25 pages, Latex, 11 figures (not included), CERN-TH.7077/93,

Direct test of composite fermion model in quantum Hall systems
We show that neutron scattering and Raman scattering experiments can
unambiguously determine a composite fermion parameter, viz., the effective
number of Landau Levels filled by the composite fermions. For this purpose, one
needs partially polarized or more preferably unpolarized quantum Hall states.
We further find that spin correlation function acts as an order parameter in
the spin transition.Comment: 18 page
Is emamectin benzoate effective against the different stages of Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae)?
peer-reviewedThis work was partially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (project AGL 2007-66130-C03-02 to P. Medina). F. Amor and P. Bengochea acknowledge the ministry of Education
and Culture and the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) for the doctoral fellowships. Special thanks to Syngenta Agro S.A. for their support. The beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), is a major
polyphagous pest in greenhouses and open fields worldwide and also a main problem
in sweet pepper greenhouses. The effectiveness of the pesticide emamectin benzoate was tested in the laboratory on different stages of S. exigua using different concentrations and uptake routes. After dipping young (48-h-old) S. exigua eggs in emamectin benzoate at 0.5, 1 and 1.5 mg/L a.i. the chemical did not exhibit any ovicidal activity. There was, however, progressive neonate mortality at all concentrations,
culminating at 72 hours after hatching, when 100% of the larvae from the treated young
eggs died. Second and fourth instar S. exigua larvae did not exhibit significant mortality when exposed to the inert surfaces which were treated. In contrast, ingesting a diet contaminated with 0.5 mg/L a.i. of emamectin benzoate caused 100% mortality in L2 and L4 larvae 24 and 72 hours after ingestion, respectively. The LC50 value of the compound against L4 larvae that fed on sprayed sweet pepper leaves for 24 hours was 0.81 mg/L a.i..
When adults were fed on a solution of 0.5 mg/L a.i., there was a reduction in the female and male lifespan of 29.3% and 55.3%, respectively. Fecundity was reduced by more than 99%. These data suggest that emamectin benzoate is not only a useful insecticide when ingested by beet armyworm larvae but it also has ovolarvicidal and adult activity.Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovatio
Accurate time-domain gravitational waveforms for extreme-mass-ratio binaries
The accuracy of time-domain solutions of the inhomogeneous Teukolsky equation
is improved significantly. Comparing energy fluxes in gravitational waves with
highly accurate frequency-domain results for circular equatorial orbits in
Schwarzschild and Kerr, we find agreement to within 1% or better, which we
believe can be even further improved. We apply our method to orbits for which
frequency-domain calculations have a relative disadvantage, specifically
high-eccentricity (elliptical and parabolic) "zoom-whirl" orbits, and find the
energy fluxes, waveforms, and characteristic strain in gravitational waves.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables; Changes: some errors corrected.
